At Hasslö Shipyard outside Karlskrona, work is underway to provide five of the Armed Forces’ training ships with modern technology. In the coming years, aging systems will be replaced, and the ships will be modernized to continue to support the Armed Forces’ education and training at sea.
FMV is leading the project, which is being carried out on behalf of the Swedish Armed Forces. Work will begin with the training ship Argo, after which the other ships will follow gradually until 2028.
“The training ships are an important part of the Armed Forces’ training activities. By modernizing the systems on board, we ensure that the ships continue to have the technology and functionality required to support education and training at sea,” says Petronella Lång, project manager at FMV.
New technology for the needs of the future
Upgrading a ship is about much more than ongoing maintenance. When the ships arrive at the shipyard, technical systems that have reached the end of their life cycle are dismantled and replaced. New technology is then installed and integrated before the ships are tested and returned to the Armed Forces.
“Many of the subsystems are what we call ‘end of life’. Electronics age faster than mechanics and therefore the systems need to be replaced,” says Johan Genestig, project manager at FMV.
A project that requires collaboration
The project is being carried out on behalf of the Swedish Armed Forces and places high demands on coordination. FMV is responsible for project management and requirements specification, while the work is carried out in close collaboration with Hasslö Shipyard and the Swedish Armed Forces. Throughout the project, an ongoing dialogue is conducted to ensure that the solutions meet the needs of the business.
“There are many parts that must work together. Therefore, a close dialogue between the client and the supplier is crucial for us to achieve a good solution,” says Johan Genestig.
When the work is completed, the five ships will be equipped with modernized technical systems and continue to provide the Armed Forces with good conditions for education and training at sea.
