The crews of the frigate “Admiral Gorshkov” and the vessel “Tansy” rescued the passengers of the vessel in distress under the flags of Germany and Greece in the Mediterranean Sea, the Russian Defense Ministry said on Monday.
“Tonight, the crews of the frigate Admiral of the Fleet of the Soviet Union Gorshkov of the Northern Fleet, performing tasks as part of the permanent connection of the Russian Navy in the Mediterranean Sea, and the dry cargo ship Tansy accompanied by it, rescued 68 passengers of the foreign vessel Avalon, which was in distress in the territorial waters of Greece,” the report said.
“While following the route to the port of Tartus in the southern Aegean Sea, the frigate Admiral of the Fleet of the Soviet Union Gorshkov was the first to receive a distress signal from the yacht-type vessel Avalon, sailing under the flags of Germany and Greece. After that, the Russian ships changed course and immediately began the transition to the disaster area,” the military department informs.
According to him, “the rescue operation was successful.”
“People from the vessel that lost speed were evacuated aboard the dry cargo ship Tansy, where they were provided with the necessary medical care, and taken to the bay of the island of Kalymnos for transfer on board the boats of the Greek Coast Guard,” the report said.
