The fast surveillance boats NRP Dragão and NRP Sagitário, of the Portuguese Navy, accompanied and monitored, between May 31 and today, June 1, two ships of the Russian Federation, the ship “Vyazma”, for transporting fuel, and the ship “Mekhanik Makarin”, for transporting bulk cargo, which were sailing in transit off the Portuguese continental coast.

The monitoring of Russian naval units stems from the defense of national interests and the exercise of state authority at sea, and is a procedure that represents a strong contribution to the security and intelligence gathering of non-allied means.

The Navy permanently ensures Portugal’s interests at sea.
