UNSW Canberra at The Australian Defence Force Academy has experts available to analyse Australia’s decision-making around the acquisition of nuclear-powered submarines and other recommendations of the final report of the Defence Strategic Review.
The report is prepared by Sir Angus Houston, a former chief of the Defence Force, and Professor Stephen Smith, a former minister for defence. It assesses Australia’s military capability and structure and makes recommendations to the federal government on preparedness and defence investment.
The Review and the direction of Australia’s military and deterrence capability are vital amid security challenges including China’s military build-up and campaign to expand its influence, the Ukraine war, and other variations from democratic norms.
