The Nevsky Shipbuilding and Ship Repair Plant (part of the United Shipbuilding Corporation, the base enterprise of the Leningrad regional branch of SoyuzMash Russia) held the laying of the medium sea tanker Alexey Shein.
The ceremony was attended by Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Navy Alexei Kiyashko, representatives of USC JSC, the design bureau, as well as the descendants of Generalissimo Shein, after whom the ship is named.
“Your merits are great. Over your long history, you, the shipbuilders of the Nevsky Shipyard, have built more than 360 river-sea ships. Soon the ship “Aleksey Shein” will leave the slipway of the enterprise, and we, the descendants of the Generalissimo, will be proud of this together with you, ”said Konstantin Shein, a descendant of the military leader who spoke at the laying.
The laid down tanker is the third serial vessel. Its construction is carried out under a contract with the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, concluded in December 2020. In total, the plant will build four medium sea tankers, which have no analogues in Russia.
The tanker is designed to receive, store, transport and transfer various liquid cargoes for the fleet: fuel oil, diesel fuel, motor oil, aviation kerosene, fresh water. It is also possible to transport dry cargo, including technical and skipper’s property, food products.
The supply tanker is capable of transferring and receiving liquid cargoes without mooring to another ship, as well as receiving, storing, transporting and transferring dry cargoes using a system of traverse transfer of cargoes to the sea. It can dispense fuel simultaneously to three ships moving from it at a distance of 50 to 100 meters on board or in the wake way.
The tanker complies with the Arc 4 ice reinforcement category and has the ability to navigate independently in rarefied first-year Arctic ice with a thickness of up to 0.8 meters in summer-autumn and up to 0.6 meters in winter-spring navigation.
The tanker was named after the first Russian Generalissimo Aleksey Semenovich Shein (1652 – 1700), an associate of Peter I. He participated in the Crimean and Azov campaigns of the Russian army, in the construction of the first sea harbor in Taganrog, was the commander-in-chief of the army and the head of the Inozemsky order.
