Regarding Australia’s surveillance and surveillance activities against illegal maritime activities including ship-to-ship transfers of North Korean-flagged vessels

  1. In response to illegal maritime activities, including ship-to-ship transfers of North Korean-flagged vessels, which are prohibited by United Nations Security Council resolutions, the Australian Navy destroyer Hobart conducted operations in waters surrounding Japan from early to mid-May. This was the 11th time since 2018 that the Australian military conducted a warning and surveillance operation using a naval vessel.
  2. Japan hopes that the international community will come together to ensure that North Korea dismantles all weapons of mass destruction and ballistic missiles of all ranges in a complete, verifiable, and irreversible manner. We welcome these efforts from the perspective of working to ensure the effectiveness of resolutions.
  3. The Ministry of Defense and the Self-Defense Forces are also collecting information on vessels suspected of violating United Nations Security Council resolutions, and will cooperate closely with relevant countries and international organizations.
