On December 23rd, the oceanographic research ship ‘Hespérides’ proceeded towards the Beagle Chanel, the south border between Argentina and Chile to call at the port of Ushuaia, the southernmost city of the world.
During her stay there, the ship will replenish and embark supplies before starting the 28th Antarctic Campaign. Spanish Army personnel and scientists will also embark to operate the ‘Gabriel de Castilla’ and ‘Juan Carlos I’ polar bases.
Ushuaia is, along with the Chilean city of Punta Arenas, one of the ports used by the ‘Hespérides’, and many other Antarctic ships, as logistic support harbor before heading to the Drake Passage and, finally, the Antarctic Peninsula.
The ‘Hespérides’ will remain in port until December 27th when she will start the transit towards the White Continent.
