The Indonesian government through the Ministry of Defense in this case the Minister of Defense of the Republic of Indonesia Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin and Chairman of Commission I of the House of Representatives of the Republic of Indonesia Utut Adianto accompanied by the Deputy Commander of the Indonesian National Armed Forces, along with the Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces officially welcomed the arrival of the light aircraft carrier ITS Giuseppe Garibaldi which was donated by the Italian Government to Indonesia. This aircraft carrier has docked at Pier 107, Tanjung Priok Port, North Jakarta, on Friday (09/18/2026) after previously entering Indonesian waters through the Indonesian Archipelago Sea Lane (ALKI) I.
After departing from Italy at the end of August 2026, during its voyage this ship has passed through a strategic global route for 25 days with a distance of 6,870 Nm across the Suez Canal, the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean. While the countries stopped for logistics refilling, refueling, and technical services were Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Sri Lanka.
The classification of ITS Giuseppe Garibaldi is 180.2 meters long, 33.4 meters wide, 6.7 meters draft. and a weight of 13,850 tons. With a propulsion system consisting of Combined Gas Turbine and Gas Turbine (COGAG) and 4 General Electric/Avio LM2500 Gas Turbines, this ship produces 81,000 horsepower with a maximum speed of thirty knots. For its cruising range of 7,000 nautical miles at an economic speed of 20 knots, and its carrying capacity is capable of carrying more than 10-18 medium/heavy class helicopters, drones and accommodating up to 830 joint personnel.
The presence of ITS Giuseppe Garibaldi will later function for Military Operations Other Than War (OMSP), especially in disaster management and humanitarian assistance and emphasizes the TNI’s progress in strengthening and modernizing the TNI AL’s Integrated Fleet Weapons System (SSAT), while demonstrating Indonesia’s commitment to the defense and security of Indonesia’s maritime territory.
