Defence is strengthening its maritime strike power with Tomahawk cruise missiles. They are for the air defence and command frigates (LC frigates). Future submarines will also be equipped with an advanced weapon system. Both needed to hit hard-to-reach targets above water and deep inland with great precision. State Secretary Gijs Tuinman informed the House of Representatives of this today.
Defense buys the Tomahawks from the American manufacturer Raytheon. This specific cruise weapon is the only one that can be fired with the launch installation of the LC frigates. The Tomahawk has a range of more than 1,000 kilometers. Defense receives the first copies in 2028.
Weapon system development
For the striking power from the submarines yet to be built, Defense is participating in the development of a weapon system. A number of European countries are working together under the leadership of Spain. This so-called ‘Joint Strike Missile – Submarine Launched’ meets all the requirements. An additional advantage is the possible participation of Dutch knowledge institutes and industry. According to the current planning, the production of the system will be ready in time to integrate it into the new submarines of the Orka class in 2032.
Old submarines
Contrary to earlier plans, Defense has decided not to equip the current old Walrus class submarines with additional striking power. This is due to the remaining lifespan of the boats and the time it takes to acquire and integrate a new weapon system.
