General Dynamics Bath Iron Works ship on “Land Level” is the future USS Quentin Walsh (DDG 132). Its namesake, Coast Guard Capt. Quentin R. Walsh, earned the Navy Cross in WWII, when he helped secure the Normandy port of Cherbourg following D-Day by bluffing that he had a force of 800 men ready to attack. This led to the surrender of 350 Germans and the release of 53 prisoners of war.
On this day, National POW/MIA Recognition Day, Bath Iron Works honors Walsh’s bravery as well as the service men and women who have gone missing in action or became prisoners of war.
