Future officers of the Brazilian Navy (MB), who are part of the 39th Training Voyage of Midshipmen aboard the training ship “Brasil”, experienced international diplomacy in practice in London (United Kingdom), by participating in an event on decarbonization of the maritime sector and measures to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from ships around the world.
The activity, held on October 16th, took place during a special meeting of the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) and provided future Brazilian Navy officers with practical experience in international diplomacy and global discussions on reducing GHG emissions.

At the meeting, the future officers received explanations about the role of the IMO as a specialized agency of the United Nations (UN), responsible for regulating international maritime transport, as well as about the functioning of the technical committees and the importance of decisions taken by consensus or by vote among the 176 Member States.
According to the Permanent Representative of Brazil to the IMO, Admiral (Retired) José Augusto Vieira da Cunha de Menezes, “this visit occurs at an emblematic moment, within the Ocean Decade, and helps to form a generation of officers aware of the importance of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and preserving the oceans.”
