From Thursday to Sunday, 10 to 13 August, traditional national and international sailors will meet at the Hanse Sail 2023. From Friday, the Warnemünde naval base will open its doors to interested parties. In addition to the base, the navy also presents its ships and boats at the passenger quay in Warnemünde and in Rostock.
“The Hanse Sail attracts thousands of visitors to Rostock and Warnemünde every year. For us as a naval base, it is a great pleasure to be an essential part of the major maritime event. In particular, we are looking forward to presenting a variety of activities in the Hohe Düne. In addition, the large equipment on display, from ships and boats of the Navy to tanks and helicopters, will offer visitors the opportunity to experience their armed forces up close again,” said the commander of the Warnemünde naval base, frigate captain Robert Lehmann.
While the Warnemünde naval base is open, there is also the possibility to visit the naval arsenal in the Warnow shipyard with a shuttle service from the boat harbour of the barracks. Guided tours are available in limited quantities.
One attraction this year will be the sailing training ship “Gorch Fock”, which will be located at the passenger quay from 9 August 18:00 and will be available for the Open Ship on Sunday. The three-master is not only used to represent the German Navy abroad, but mainly for the nautical training of its junior officers.
The next eye-catcher will follow on Sunday. At 13 p.m., the corvette “Oldenburg” sails from the Warnemünde naval base towards the Mediterranean. Over the next six months, the grey ship will be involved in both the mandated foreign deployment UNIFIL
(United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon) off the Lebanese coast as well as at the NATO support mission in the Aegean Sea participate.
In addition to the German sail training ship, the Indonesian sailor “Bima Suci” also docks in Warnemünde. NATO’s Permanent Mine Countermeasures Unit 1 and the Danish Home Guard cutters “Lyra” and “Aldebaran” are further guests on the Sail. In addition, the corvette “Ludwigshafen am Rhein” and the hollow rod steering boat “Pegnitz” will moor in Rostock.
At the naval base itself, guests can also look forward to action from the air: Sea-King helicopter of Naval Aviation Squadron 5 shows a simulated sea rescue in the harbor basin of the base. In addition, the helmet divers demonstrate their skills. Four field kitchens provide for the physical well-being of the guests and the musical framework is provided by the Hanover Army Music Corps.
