The Federal Office for Equipment, Information Technology and Use of the German Armed Forces (BAAINBw) is procuring a new integrated marine rescue center (i-MERZ) for the task force supply company (EGV) Berlin. The Vice President BAAINBw signed today, together with the Managing Director of the German Naval Yard Kiel, a contract for the construction of an i-MERZ and its integration on the EGV Berlin. The budget committee of the German Bundestag had previously approved the project.
The construction of the i-MERZ is to start immediately after the conclusion of the contract. According to current planning, the project, consisting of the construction of the i-MERZ and the subsequent integration on the EGV Berlin, should be completed in mid-2024.
The EGV Frankfurt am Main has already been successfully equipped with an i-MERZ. The Berlin is now the second EGV, which will in future make the most modern medical technology available to the troops on site.
With a displacement of more than 20,000t, the task force supply units are the largest units in the German Navy and not only ensure the medical care of the task forces at sea, but also supply them with fuel, food, material and ammunition.
