Destroyer Chokai, currently deployed to the United States, conducted a live-fire test of a Tomahawk missile in the Pacific Ocean on July 29, 2026 (July 28, 2026 Pacific Daylight Time), with the support of the U.S. Navy. The test confirmed that the missile was capable of being launched, including the proficiency of the crew.
Chokai is scheduled to return to Japan around September 2026.
This live-fire test demonstrates steady progress in the Tomahawk project, and the Ministry of Defense will continue to work towards the early establishment of stand-off defense capabilities.
