As part of the United States’ Diesel Electric Submarine Initiative (DESI) program, the Peruvian Navy held a departure ceremony for the BAP “Pisagua” at the submarine pier of the Callao Naval Base. The vessel is now en route to the United States to undertake 109 days of training in a highly demanding operational environment. This deployment, alongside the presence of the BAP “Chipana” in U.S. territory, will allow two Peruvian submarines to highlight the capabilities of the Submarine Force on the international stage. The ceremony was presided over by the General Commander of the Navy, Admiral Javier Bravo de Rueda Delgado, accompanied by the General Commander of Pacific Operations, Vice Admiral Gian Marco Chiapperini Faverio, and the Commander of the Submarine Force, Rear Admiral Luis León Cores, as well as the crew members’ families.

SUBDIEX 2026-II will enable the BAP Pisagua to test its capabilities, refine tactics, and enhance the experience of its submariners through operations against forces equipped with state-of-the-art anti-submarine systems. Prior to departure, Rear Admiral Luis León Cores highlighted the level of readiness achieved by the crew and urged them to maintain discipline, professionalism, and *esprit de corps* throughout the mission. Additionally, the General Commander of the Navy presented the Submarine Force Command pennant to the commanding officer of the BAP “Pisagua,” Frigate Captain Ricardo Urdanivia Morales. With this significant deployment, Peru stands as the only country in the region to have two submarines deployed simultaneously to conduct training and operations alongside the United States Navy. This marks a milestone in the international projection of Peru’s submarine capabilities and demonstrates its capacity to sustain demanding operations well beyond its own jurisdictional waters. In this way, the Peruvian Navy—through the General Command of Pacific Operations and the Submarine Force—strengthens interoperability, enhances the operational readiness of its crews, and reaffirms its commitment to national security and defense.
