Dutch frigate HNLMS De Ruyter visited Surabaya 14 May, a powerful signal of the enduring friendship and growing strategic partnership between the Netherlands and Indonesia.
The ship’s arrival was marked by a ceremonial reception hosted by the East Java Provincial Government, the City of Surabaya, and representatives from the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) and local Police, a fitting tribute to a visit that carries weight well beyond the nautical.
Following the official ceremony, the crew, joined by Ambassador Marc Gerritsen and Deputy Head of the Dutch Defense Attaché Patrick Stähli, welcomed Indonesian media on board for an exclusive tour of the frigate. It was an opportunity to bring the ship’s mission to life and share it with the Indonesian public firsthand.
The day concluded in style with a reception and dinner that brought together a distinguished gathering: local government officials, TNI and Polri representatives, business leaders, cultural figures, and members of our Oranye Alumni Network. The kind of evening that reminds us that the strongest partnerships are built not just in meeting rooms and on the water, but around the dinner table.
HNLMS De Ruyter’s presence in Indonesia carries a meaning that extends far beyond its hull. It arrives as a symbol of diplomacy, friendship, and shared commitment, a statement that the Netherlands and Indonesia stand together not just today, but for generations to come.
