Standing NATO Maritime Group 1 (SNMG1) reinforced its operational presence in the High North for the second time this year, conducting activities aimed at enhancing readiness, cooperation, and maritime situational awareness in a strategically significant and demanding environment.
A central element of the deployment was SNMG1’s participation in the Royal Norwegian Navy exercise Arctic Advance, where the group supported the Norwegian Submarine Commanders Course. Operating in complex Arctic conditions, SNMG1 provided realistic and challenging training opportunities focused on Anti-Submarine Warfare, further strengthening Allied interoperability and operational proficiency.
SNMG1 also patrolled the Norwegian sea, with particular emphasis on improving situational awareness around critical infrastructure. As part of its routine maritime presence, the group also professionally monitored several Russian units in close coordination with the Norwegian authorities.
The Task Group further enhanced its capabilities through joint training with Norwegian F-35 fighter aircraft. During the exercises, the F-35s conducted simulated attacks against the task group, providing realistic air defense training for SNMG1 crews and significantly strengthening operational readiness in the High North.
Commander SNMG1 Royal Netherlands Navy Commodore Arjen Warnaar said this deployment has demonstrated the strength and flexibility of SNMG1 while operating under challenging High North conditions.
Our crews have gained invaluable experience in anti-submarine warfare and air defense. Through vigilance and cooperation with our Norwegian Allies, we have enhanced NATO’s readiness and presence in this strategically important region.
