Friday, November 7, 2025, is a significant day for the German Navy: With the landing of the first P-8A Poseidon at Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER), the modernization of Germany’s maritime patrol capabilities is progressing. The first P-8A Poseidon of the German Navy will be received at 1 p.m. by the Federal Minister of Defense, Boris Pistorius, and the Commander of the Fleet and Support Forces, Vice Admiral Axel Deertz.
Prior to this, there will be a background briefing (under 3) for all accredited media representatives regarding the capabilities of the P-8A.
The aircraft will arrive in Berlin from the USA via Iceland on November 7th at approximately 1 p.m. and will be ferried in by a German Navy crew. With its arrival, the handover and integration phase into Naval Air Wing 3 “Graf Zeppelin” at Nordholz begins. Germany has ordered a total of eight Boeing P-8A Poseidon aircraft. The P-8A will replace the P-3C Orion.
The arrival of the modern maritime patrol and anti-submarine warfare aircraft marks the beginning of a new era of maritime operational capability. At the same time, its arrival in Berlin symbolizes what the German Navy accomplishes every day – protecting our freedom and security, which depend significantly on maritime security.
The P-8A Poseidon is based on the Boeing 737 airliner and is in service with several NATO partners worldwide. It is capable of monitoring large maritime areas, tracking ship movements, and locating and engaging submarines.
The introduction of the Poseidon not only strengthens the operational capability of the German Armed Forces, but also interoperability within NATO. Joint training, maintenance, and data integration with partner nations, including the USA, the United Kingdom, Norway, and Australia, significantly increase the efficiency and operational readiness of maritime air forces.
