As part of its large scale long deployment from April till October 2024, the French Destroyer Bretagne, based in Brest, has called in Kota Kinabalu.

France is very grateful to Malaysia and the Royal Malaysia Navy for their warm welcome and great support on the occasion of the Port of Call of Destroyer “Bretagne” in Kota Kinabalu.

This stop in Malaysia of a high-end and multirole French Ship illustrates the high level of the defense cooperation between France and Malaysia.

For the last 20 years, French and Malaysian Navies have developed very close links, particularly regarding submarine and anti-submarine capabilities.

Co-chaired by Ambassador Axel Cruau and CAPT Audrey Boutteville, Commanding Officer of the « Bretagne », an official lunch was organized on board on the 4th September, with the participation of high level Malaysian authorities; followed by a reception in the evening, allowing a large number of RMN officers to be invited and interact with both the crew and French residents in Kota Kinabalu.

These two events gave the opportunity for fruitful exchanges nourishing our partnership.

During their opening speeches, Ambassador Axel Cruau and Captain Audrey Boutteville (Commanding Officer of the FS) highlighted the long lasting and solid dense defense cooperation between our France and Malaysia, based on 3 pilars : political interacation, military activities and cooperation in the field of equipment. Naval cooperation is at the core of our defense partnership.
