The Unarang Coral Suar is one of the basic points of Indonesia as a reference for determining the boundaries of the sea to the territorial, continental shelf and Exclusive Economic Zone. The determination of the Unarang Coral Beacon as a basepoint has been stipulated in the Government Regulation of the Republic of Indonesia Number 37 of 2008 concerning Amendments to Government Regulation Number 38 of 2002 concerning the List of Geographical Coordinates of the Baseline Points of the Indonesian Archipelago.
The Unarang reef, which is located in the Sulawesi Sea and North Kalimantan Province, is numbered Base Point (TD) 037 with geographic coordinates 04°00’38” N – 118°04’58” T, previously Base Point 037 was in Tanjung Arang (Bunyu Island). ) and as a marker of Indonesia’s Ambalat (Sea Threshold) Area.
The existence of the Unarang Coral Beacon as a Base Point has been included in the Indonesian Marine Map Number 489 and Number 59 with a scale of 1 to 200,000. This coral only appears when the sea water recedes at its lowest position with a coral height of only about 30 centimeters.
The proclamation ceremony at Karang Unarang was held on the deck of KRI I Gusti Ngurah Rai-332 which is an element of the Satkor Koarmada II with Irup the Governor of Prov. Kaltara Mr. Drs. H. The Commander of Lantamal XIII hoped that Karang Unarang would become the boundary of the Indonesia-Malaysia State as well as be used as a beacon of the world that must be guarded by all components of the nation.
