Change of command ceremony
of the Baltic Naval Squadron BALTRON will be held on June 26 in the
Lithuanian Naval Force Flotilla of Warships (Klaipėda). Officer of the
Lithuanian Naval Force Cmdr. Eugenijus Valikovas, present Commander of
BALTRON, will be replaced by Lt. Cmdr. Maris Polencs, officer of the Naval
Force of Latvia. A part of international staff will also rotate. Supply and
command ship of LNF Jotvingis (N42) will enter into the unit along with
commissioning of the new Commander to replace LNF mine hunter and sweeper Sūduvis
(M52). Jotvingis will be in command of captain Lt. Vytautas Šakalys. Baltic
Naval Squadron (BALTRON) was established in 1998. It is made of warships and
international staff contributed by Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia. Commander
of BALTRON and members of the international staff are appointed for one year
on a rotation basis, and warships - for a half of year.One of the main tasks
BALTRON is in charge of is detection and neutralisation of unexploded
ammunition remaining on the Baltic seafloor from WWII. The Baltic Naval
Squadron also serves as a training platform before joining NATO naval units.
