After months of planning, which included some unique adjustments to the Dry Dock, and bringing in special “push boats” to help with the docking, USS South Dakota (SSN 790) recently became the first Virginia-class submarine to enter the TRIDENT Refit Facility, Kings Bay (TRF-KB) Dry Dock.

Primarily built and used for maintenance on larger Ohio-class ballistic missile (SSBN) and guided missile (SSGN) submarines, the TRF-KB Dry Dock, one of the largest covered dry docks in the world, is more than suitable to provide the needed space for maintenance and repairs on the smaller fast attack submarine.
