Navy surveys the sub-Antarctic sea floor

February 26, 2019 – The Laser Airborne Depth Sounder (LADS) Flight is currently deployed to Invercargill in New Zealand to undertake survey operations over Macquarie Island, a 34km long World Heritage listed island that lies approximately halfway between Australia and Antarctica. Macquarie Island is part of Tasmania and hosts an Australian Antarctic Division research station. Navy Airborne Survey for Papua New Guinea waters

The Laser Airborne Depth Sounder (LADS) Flight has just commenced a five week deployment to Rabaul, Papua New Guinea. While operating from Rabaul LADS will undertake hydrographic surveys in the Kavieng and Rabaul regions. Commanding Officer, Lieutenant Commander Mark Matthews, said the survey will provide improved data that will be used to update the existing nautical charts used by all vessels.
