Navantia will design and construct two new Offshore Patrol Vessels (BAM) for the Spanish Navy, joining the six units already in service (Meteoro, Rayo, Relámpago, Tornado, Audaz, and Furor). The new ships are intended to strengthen maritime surveillance and security while ensuring the long-term operational capability of the Navy’s maritime action force.

With a budget of 716 million euros, the program represents the second extension of the BAM class and will deliver significant upgrades in both operational systems and crew living standards. Engineering is set to begin after contract signing, with production planned to start in the first half of 2027.

Key improvements will include:
– An updated combat system and a next-generation Integrated Platform Management System (IPMS)
– Enhanced communication, navigation, and cybersecurity systems
– Integration of unmanned vehicles
– Expanded workspaces, medical facilities, and crew accommodation

These innovations will enable the Spanish Navy to meet today’s maritime security challenges more effectively, while improving quality of life on board.

Engineering will be fully carried out using the ELCANO digital environment, Navantia’s proprietary platform based on Siemens technologies. By integrating design, modelling, simulation, and construction in a single workflow, Navantia is setting a benchmark for digital shipbuilding.

Construction will take place at Navantia’s Puerto Real facilities, where advanced automation is already in place. The state-of-the-art flat block workshop—also building blocks for the UK’s Fleet Solid Support (FSS) program—will be central to the production process. Its cutting-edge welding system will increase efficiency, reduce heat impact, and minimize deformation, ensuring higher-quality results.

With this step, Navantia continues to drive innovation and transformation in naval shipbuilding, reinforcing Spain’s capabilities.
