Batch-I. and Batch-II. The groundbreaking ceremony is an event to cut the first steel to be used in the construction of submarines and to pray for the successful construction of the ship, which means that the process has begun in earnest. The Jangbogo-III. Batch-II. submarine is a 3,600-ton submarine, making it the heaviest and largest submarine in service with the ROK military. Batch-II submarines are better than Batch-I. submarine detection? It is the world’s latest and most advanced submarine that can stay underwater for a long time and operate with a lithium battery system along with a combat sonar system with improved target processing capability.

In particular, the Jangbogo-III. Batch-II. submarine will be equipped with more than 70 types of localized equipment by discovering equipment that has the potential to be localized during the project and applying more localized equipment than planned from the project initiation stage.

With the expansion of such localized equipment, the ROK military will not only be able to operate submarines more stably, but it is also expected to contribute to the revitalization of the domestic economy in the submarine construction process and overseas submarine construction projects.

The groundbreaking ceremony was held today, and the third ship will be completed by ’29 and will be delivered to the Navy in ’31 after commissioning, while the first ship will be launched in ’25 and the second in ’26 for test evaluation and commissioning for electrification.

Lee Sang-woo, head of the Korea Submarine Project Division of the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA), said, “As the construction process of Jangbogo-III. Batch-II. Ship No. 3 has begun in earnest, we will do our best to acquire submarines, which are the core power of our military, in a timely manner through continuous strengthening of cooperation and organic communication between the public, private sector, and the military so that a stable construction system can be maintained.”
