Sri Lanka Navy Ships (SLNS) Sagara and Nandimithra sailed back into the Port of Colombo on 27 Feb 26, having proudly flown the Sri Lankan flag at the International Fleet Review (IFR) and MILAN-26 multilateral naval exercise held in India. The vessels were welcomed with traditional naval honours upon their return.
The high-profile naval gathering took place from18 to 26 February in the Eastern Indian Ocean, off the coast of Visakhapatnam. Representing Sri Lanka on the global stage, the participation of these two vessels underscored the nation’s commitment to collective maritime security and regional stability.
The International Fleet Review was held under the theme “United Through Oceans,” while the MILAN-26 exercise focused on the core values of “Camaraderie, Cohesion, and Collaboration.” By engaging with numerous regional and global partners, the Sri Lanka Navy demonstrated its dedication to overcoming maritime challenges through a unified approach.
During the Harbour Phase of the event, participating nations engaged in a wide-ranging exchange of professional knowledge regarding maritime security. The crews of SLNS Sagara and Nandimithra took part in a diverse array of programmes, including an International City Parade and a Food Gala, which were organized to showcase the unique cultures of the participating nations. Furthermore, the Sri Lanka Navy’s band and dance troupe contributed to the vibrance of these events, performing to highlight the country’s rich cultural heritage on the international stage.
The Sea Phase of MILAN-26 featured complex maneuvers designed to enhance interoperability between navies and coast guards. The exercise saw an impressive assembly of 42 warships and submarines (including 18 from foreign nations) and 29 aircraft.
Participation in such multilateral naval exercises allows the Sri Lanka Navy to share best practices, adopt modern strategic tactics, and identify emerging maritime threats. By working alongside global partners, the Navy continues to enhance its capacity to ensure a stable and secure maritime zone, vital for both regional and international interests.
