The Russian military reported that it lifted a MiG-31 fighter-interceptor into the air near the Barents Sea to escort the Orion maritime patrol aircraft of the Norwegian Air Force.

“After the turn of a foreign military aircraft from the state border of the Russian Federation, the Russian fighter safely returned to the home airfield,” the National Defense Control Center of the Russian Federation said on Monday.

“Violation of the state border of the Russian Federation has not been allowed. The flight of the Russian fighter was carried out in strict accordance with international rules for the use of airspace over neutral waters without crossing the air routes and dangerously approaching the aircraft of a foreign state,” the military said.
