The hydro-oceanographic ship NRP D. Carlos I started, this week, a scientific campaign in the Selvagens Islands, in which teams from the Hydrographic Institute (IH), the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), the Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation (IFCN), the Regional Directorate for Spatial Planning and the University of Beira Interior (UBI) participate.
This mission aims to strengthen oceanographic and meteorological observation in the Selvagens Islands on a permanent basis, namely through the installation of a tide gauge station, a meteorological station and a Global Navigation Satellite System station. At the same time, topography work will be carried out in Selvagem Grande and Selvagem Pequena.
This mission will allow abetter understanding of local meteorological and oceanographic phenomena, responding to the need to monitor climate change and, in particular, the rise in average sea level.
In addition, the NRP D. Carlos I will carry out a hydrographic survey south of the Selvagens Islands, thus expanding the hydrographic information in the southernmost area of the Portuguese Exclusive Economic Zone.
