HNLMS Pelikaan deployed from Curaçao to Jamaica October 31 for emergency relief. This is because the Caribbean island was severely affected after Hurricane Melissa swept through on Tuesday.

The naval vessel is carrying food, medical supplies, and shelters, among other things. It will make a stopover in Barbados to load additional relief supplies.

The Pelican is equipped with a crane and a large cargo hold. This makes the logistical support vessel very suitable for this relief task.

HNLMS Pelikaan is expected to arrive in Jamaica mid-next week. The deployment is being carried out at the request of the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency.
