Following a three-months period of intense maintenance activities, which were completed on schedule, the first Italian Logistic Support Ship (LSS) “VULCANO” has now successfully rejoined the Italian Navy fleet in full operational capacity. The maintenance for the first French LSS “Jacques Chevalier” was completed in late 2024.

The LSS represents an excellent example of modern naval engineering, developed through the industrial joint venture between Fincantieri and Leonardo for the Italian Navy and Chantier de L’Atlantique and Naval Group for the French Navy. Its management falls under OCCAR within the framework of Italian-French international cooperation. The Ship offers extensive dual-use capabilities, ranging from its logistical capacities and cutting-edge technologies to its commitment to environmental sustainability. Additionally, she is equipped with state-of-the-art hospital facilities and resources for humanitarian and disaster relief efforts.

The maintenance period marks a significant milestone in the Temporary Support. The maintenance activities were carried out through the LSS In-Service Support involving the engagement of the Temporary Consortium composed of Fincantieri and Leonardo. Through the LSS In Service Support it has been possible not only to maintain the expected maintenance schedule but it has also been possible to implement some engineering changes resulting from lessons learned in the virtuous path of continuous improvement.

The event underscores another achievement for OCCAR’s management approach, which effectively addresses and resolves technical challenges and provides effective logistical support during the life cycle through close cooperation and coordination with the Industry and the Italian Navy.
