Chief of Naval Staff (Kasal) Admiral TNI Dr. Muhammad Ali representing the Minister of Defense of the Republic of Indonesia (Menhan RI) Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin, officially led the handover ceremony, inauguration of KRI Brawijaya-320, and inauguration of the Commander of KRI Brawijaya-320 at the Fincantieri shipyard, Muggiano, Italy. Wednesday (2/7/2025).

In the ceremony, Navy Colonel (P) John David Nalasakti Sondakh was officially inaugurated as Commander of KRI Brawijaya-320. The ship strengthens the ranks of the Indonesian Navy under the Escort Ship Unit of Fleet Command II (Koarmada II).

The Indonesian Minister of Defense in a written speech read by Kasal said that the presence of KRI Brawijaya-320 plays a strategic role in improving Indonesia’s maritime defense capabilities. This ship not only adds to the Indonesian Navy’s fleet, but is also a significant step in Indonesia’s defense modernization.

Meanwhile, Kasal in his speech at the inauguration ceremony of KRI Brawijaya-320, said that the presence of KRI Brawijaya-320 is part of the realization of the priority program of TNI AL development, namely modernization of defense equipment and efforts to fulfill the needs of Alpalhankam and strengthening capabilities in the field of defense, especially anti-surface ship warfare.

KRI Brawijaya-320 is a PPA type frigate produced by Fincantieri, Italy which has capabilities in patrol and water surveillance missions. “This warship is very appropriate for Indonesia which has a very wide sea area,” said Kasal.

With a length of 143 M and a maximum speed of 32 knots, this ship which can accommodate 171 crew is a frigate that has Anti-Air Warfare (AAW) capabilities with a design that emphasizes flexibility, modularity and scalability of ship design so that the ship can be configured to meet technical requirements and operational roles for the modern Navy. In addition, KRI Brawijaya-320 is also equipped with a modern navigation system and an integrated Combat System for control including the Combat Management System (CMS), sensors, weapons, communication and navigation systems connected via a high-speed data network.

Furthermore, this ship also marks a new history in the bilateral defense collaboration between Indonesia and Italy, because it is the first PPA type ship obtained by Indonesia from Italy.

Also present at the event were the Chief of the Italian Navy, Admiral Ernesto Credendino, the Indonesian Ambassador to Italy, Prof. Dr. Junimart Girsang, Aslog Panglima TNI Major General TNI Candra Wijaya, Ses Baranahan Kemhan Rear Admiral TNI Muhammad Taufik Hidayat, and Kadisadal Rear Admiral TNI Ifa Djaya Sakti and the Indonesian Defense Attaché in Rome, Colonel Laut (P) Andre Dotulung.
