The Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) and the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) commenced the year 2025 with the execution of Exercise MALPAN. The goodwill exercise was in the Straits of Malacca involved KD LEKIU, KD LEKIR, JS ARIAKE and JS HAMAGIRI.
The Japanese warships are in Malaysia for an operational visit involving replenishment activities, crew rest, field visits, and the execution of Exercise MALPAN. This visit is not a routine stopover but serves as a crucial platform for strengthening maritime defence relations between Malaysia and Japan.
Exercise MALPAN is being conducted for the first time after the Malaysia-Japan N2NT meeting earlier this year. All four ships set sail to carry out exercises, including Communication Exercise, Publication Exercise, Maneuvering Exercise, and Photo Exercise. These activities aim to enhance coordination, communication, and mutual understanding between both naval forces in a dynamic operational environment.
Although this exercise is conducted during the month of Ramadan, it does not hinder The Navy People from serving wholeheartedly to ensure that the RMN’s readiness remains at the highest level. Exercise MALPAN 2025 also reflects the strengthening of defense diplomacy between Malaysia and Japan, further expanding strategic cooperation in the region. The trust and understanding fostered through this joint exercise is proof of both nations’ commitment to ensure regional maritime stability and security.
As for JS ARIAKE and JS HAMAGIRI, Arigato, Bon Voyage, Sayonara, Fair Winds & Following Seas.
