The June 18 ceremony, chaired by STM’s Deputy Director General of Naval Systems, Bülent Soydal, was attended by the Head of the Multidisciplinary Teams of the New Naval Assets Projects, Rear Admiral Barbosa Rodrigues, among other entities.
The new ships have the mission of increasing the squadron’s capacity and ensuring sustained logistical support in national and international military operations, as well as in missions of public interest. Among its main functions are the transport and resupply at sea of Naval Units with fuel for ships and aircraft, drinking water, general solid cargo, and ammunition, in addition to offering diversified logistical support and increased hospital functions for disaster situations.
These ships, 137 metres long and with a displacement of 11,000 tonnes, reach a maximum speed of more than eighteen knots and have hybrid propulsion, combining diesel and electric systems.
The garrison will consist of fifty soldiers, with extra accommodation for another fifty elements and temporary capacity for more than one hundred people, ensuring flexibility for different types of missions.
The delivery of the NRP D. Dinis is scheduled for December 2028, while the first ship, NRP Luís de Camões, is expected to be delivered in April of the same year, representing a strategic step to strengthen the autonomy and operational capacity of the Portuguese Navy, ensuring greater flexibility in national and international missions.
