Rauma Marine Constructions Oy (RMC Defense Oy) has started the production of the second multipurpose corvette of the Laivue 2020 project. The cutting of the steel structures of the second ship of the squadron started in Rauma in the presence of invited guests today, October 9, 24.
In the Laivue 2020 project, four multipurpose corvettes designed for the changing conditions of the Baltic Sea will be built. Ship building and versatile design work progress in parallel. The keel of the first ship was laid in Rauma last April. The entire squadron is scheduled to be ready by 2029. The logistics department of the Defense Forces is the orderer of the ships.
The Navy Fleet 2020 project will replace some of the current Navy ships. The multipurpose corvettes produced by the project will form the backbone of Finland’s maritime defense alongside the systems of other forces. Corvettes also provide a significant capability for NATO’s maritime defense.
Corvettes are capable in all seasons, e.g. for sea mining, surface and air defense, underwater warfare, securing sea connections and long-term maritime presence.
