The German Customs Administration christened the LNG multi-watch vessel RÜGEN, built by Fr. Fassmer GmbH & Co. KG, in a ceremonial ceremony on March 18, 2025. The 67-meter-long ship built by Fassmer has a top speed of over 23 knots and an innovative LNG propulsion system, the RÜGEN sets new standards in modern and fast government vehicles.

The RÜGEN combines the highest technical efficiency with future-oriented sustainability. Its LNG propulsion underscores the importance of liquefied natural gas as a transitional technology for more “climate-friendly” shipping. At the same time, the ship meets the demanding speed and functionality requirements of the German Customs Directorate to ensure the monitoring of maritime traffic in the North and Baltic Seas and Germany’s Exclusive Economic Zone.

“Today’s christening of the RÜGEN marks a significant milestone for this ambitious project,” said Jan Oskar Henkel, Managing Director of Fassmer, at the ceremony. “The close collaboration with the General Customs Directorate has made it possible to create a vessel that sets new standards in the field of fast government vehicles while simultaneously meeting the highest environmental requirements.”

After intensive sea trials and comprehensive simulation training for the crew, the RÜGEN is now ready for deployment. The ship will assume control and surveillance tasks and support the Central Maritime Accident Command in emergencies.

With the completion and handover of the RÜGEN, Fassmer once again underlines its role as a leading manufacturer of modern special-purpose vessels and a partner for sustainable maritime solutions. The RÜGEN stands for technological excellence and innovative solutions that meet the challenges of tomorrow’s shipping.
