On July 20, 2026, Vice Admiral Axel Deertz handed over command of the German forces and the leadership of the UNIFIL (United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon) multinational Maritime Task Force (MTF) to Rear Admiral Christian Scherrer. He succeeds Rear Admiral Stephan Plath.
Until the end of 2026, the German Navy will continue to participate in the United Nations peacekeeping mission in Lebanon. Germany is contributing the frigate “Baden-Württemberg” to the UNIFIL naval force, staff personnel to the UNIFIL headquarters in Naqoura, and training personnel to build the capabilities of the Lebanese Navy in Jounieh.
Vice Admiral Axel Deertz, Deputy Inspector General and Commander of the Fleet and Support Forces, traveled to Lebanon for the change of command ceremony and wished the new commander every success: “As the new commander of the German forces and Commander of the UNIFIL Maritime Task Force, I wish you, as the new commander of the German forces, a steady hand, foresight, and always the right decisions for the well-being of your soldiers and for the successful completion of your mission. You are taking over an exceptionally well-organized contingent characterized by high professionalism, international recognition, and strong camaraderie. I am convinced that you will continue this successful path with competence and dedication.”
Rear Admiral Christian Scherrer, who previously commanded the frigate “Brandenburg,” has extensive experience in multinational command structures through assignments at the German Federal Ministry of Defense and NATO headquarters in Brussels. “It is a great honor for me to assume command of the UNIFIL Maritime Task Force – and at the same time a task I approach with great respect. My goal is to continue the Maritime Task Force’s successful trajectory in the remaining months of its mandate and to further strengthen the trusting cooperation with our Lebanese colleagues,” he explained.
