During the 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30), held in Belém (PA), the Hydro-oceanographic Research Vessel (NPqHo) “Vital de Oliveira” is part of the Brazilian Navy’s Naval Component Force, within the context of the “Marajoara” Joint Operational Command. The naval vessel plays an essential role in river and environmental security in the areas under the Force’s responsibility.

The “Vital de Oliveira” is equipped with high-precision sensors capable of multibeam imaging and lateral scanning of the riverbed. These technologies allow the detection of submerged objects, mines, and sunken vessels that may pose a risk to navigation or port facilities related to COP30. This ensures safe access channels and freedom of maneuver for national and foreign ships operating in Belém during the conference.

The Commander of the “Vital de Oliveira”, Frigate Captain Phellipe de Araújo Magalhães, emphasizes: “The ‘Vital de Oliveira’ is a mobile laboratory that takes science to the sea. The ship collects data from the atmosphere, the surface of the sea or river water, the ocean water column, the seabed and subsoil, so that Brazil can better understand its waters and use its resources sustainably. Furthermore, the ship’s capabilities allow for its use in security and defense, assisting in the protection of the city during COP30.

”Since its incorporation into the Navy in 2015, the ship has participated in dozens of scientific campaigns in the South Atlantic and the Amazon region, such as the projects of the “Oceanographic Modeling and Observation Network” (REMO Observacional) program, which brings together civilian and military institutions with the aim of expanding knowledge about the oceans and their relationship with the planet’s climate.

In May 2024, the ship was employed in monitoring and sweeping for potential submerged threats in the anchorage area in Guanabara Bay, Rio de Janeiro. The operation was carried out during the stay of the US Navy aircraft carrier “USS George Washington,” in the context of Operation “Southern Seas.”
