On her return trip to Callao, after completing the XXXI Peruvian Scientific Campaign to Antarctica, the BAP “Carrasco” arrived at the port of Ushuaia, Argentina, where its crew carried out protocol activities, which contributed to strengthening the ties of bilateral union and friendship.
There, the unit was received by the Peruvian Ambassador Carlos Chocano Burga, authorities from the Argentine Navy and the naval attaché, who boarded the ship and received the greeting of its Commander, Captain Víctor Vivanco Moscoso.
At another time, a Peruvian delegation visited the Command of the Southern Naval Area and the Headquarters of the Ushuaia Naval Base, the Government and the Municipal Government. Later, the local authorities boarded the unit, where they learned about its capabilities and tasted the national gastronomy.
It is worth noting that the oceanographic vessel arrived in Ushuaia after crossing the difficult and dangerous Drake Passage, which connects the Antarctic Peninsula with the southernmost region of the South American continent, which demonstrated the professionalism of its crew.
In addition, in the last phase of its operations on the White Continent, the naval unit’s crew visited the Antarctic bases “Pedro Vicente Maldonado” in Ecuador, “Decepción” in Argentina, “Gabriel de Castilla” in Spain, “La Gran Muralla” in China, “Rey Sejong” in South Korea, “Presidente Frei” in Chile, “Bellingshausen” in Russia, which were added to the “Comandante Ferraz” in Brazil and the “Henryk Arctowski” in Poland, visited in January.
In return, delegations from foreign bases, including personnel from the “Artigas” base in Uruguay, visited the Peruvian naval unit. These activities allowed for the exchange of information on scientific and logistical tasks, experiences and lessons learned, within a framework of coordination and cooperation under the guidelines of the Antarctic Treaty System.
In mid-February, a geological cruise concluded the scientific work on board the oceanographic unit.
