February 23, 2020 (Google Translation) – As part of a hydrographic mission supported by the Armed Forces in New Caledonia (FANC), divers from the Overseas Support and Assistance Building (BSAOM) of Entrecasteaux and the Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service of the Navy ( SHOM) carried out dimensioning work on the wreckage of an American Avenger aircraft .
These dimensioning works make it possible to precisely reference maritime objects on a map. SHOM produces the maritime charts essential for the conduct of operations, safety, environmental protection and the development of the maritime economy.
Located in the Entrecasteaux atolls nature reserve in the Coral Sea, this wreck dates from the Second World War.
If the history of the Avenger is unknown, its presence reminds us that New Caledonia was one of the first territories to join Free France on September 19, 1940, after General de Gaulle’s call. New Caledonia was also a decisive rear base for the American armies during the Pacific War, and in particular during the Battle of the Coral Sea in 1942.
This hydrographic mission contributes to improving knowledge of the maritime environment and the safety of navigation in Caledonian waters.
