March 2, 2020 – State Representative John Nygren (R-Marinette), Co-Chair of the Joint Committee on Finance released the following statement:
“Last week, I circulated a letter among my colleagues in the State Legislature in support of Fincantieri Marinette Marine (FMM),” said Rep. Nygren. “The letter, which will be delivered to the Trump Administration, has received broad bipartisan support. I am humbled and proud to report that 54 Democrat and Republica Senators and Representatives have signed onto this important letter of support.
“The outpouring of support from every corner of the state shows how important Marinette and Marinette Marine is to the state. This level of support definitely puts winds in the sails of Marinette Marine’s efforts.”
Marinette Marine is currently engaged in an extremely competitive process to win the contract to build the next generation of Frigate ships for the US Navy. Currently, Marinette Marine builds Littoral Combat Ships (LCS) for the Navy. Recently, the Navy has announced it will discontinue the use of the LCS and will be transitioning to new Guided Missile Frigates – FFG(X). Marinette Marine is one of three finalists in the running to win the contract.
The contract, which the Navy expects to award in the next several months, will require the delivery of Frigates with an approximate value of $800M to $900M per ship over the next decade. With the potential to add up to 1,000 employees in Marinette, this contract will obviously have a huge impact on Northeast Wisconsin’s economy, but the impact will be felt throughout Wisconsin.
Currently Marinette Marine has over 200 suppliers in Wisconsin alone. These suppliers are located throughout all of Wisconsin; in Green Bay, Madison, Janesville, Hudson, and everywhere in between. Wisconsin is expected to add an additional 5,600 direct and induced jobs as a result of the contract. It is in Wisconsin’s best interest that Marinette Marine win this contract.
“I would like to extend a sincere thank you to all my colleagues for the continued support of this important Wisconsin-based company,” said Rep. Nygren. “Additionally, I’d like to thank Governor Evers for his advocacy of Marinette Marine on the national level. When it comes to supporting Wisconsin’s economy, we’re all in the same boat.”
The letter is being hand delivered to the White House this afternoon.
