U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Forrest Rednour (WPC 1129) completed a 33-day migrant interdiction patrol in support of Operation Border Trident from Sept. 19 to Oct. 22 in the Los Angeles and San Diego area.

During the patrol, the crew conducted maritime border security operations supporting the detection and interdiction of unsafe and unlawful migration attempts at sea.

“This patrol reflects the Coast Guard’s persistent, multi-mission presence throughout the Southern California maritime region,” said Lt. Nicholas Thornton, commanding officer of Coast Guard Cutter Forrest Rednour. “This crew stands ready to conduct border security operations, enforce federal laws and respond to developing situations at sea. Dangerous and illegal migration attempts place lives at risk, especially when smugglers use overcrowded, poorly equipped vessels that are not suited for ocean conditions.”

One significant case involved the interdiction of a suspected migrant-smuggling vessel operating without navigation lights. Coast Guard assets responded to the vessel, which was initially noncompliant and prompted the cutter’s pursuit team to employ disabling fire.

Coast Guard personnel identified 18 suspected aliens aboard the vessel. All individuals were transferred to U.S. Customs and Border Protection personnel in Oceanside.

In addition to border security operations, the cutter’s crew conducted a law enforcement and fisheries inspection approximately 80 miles offshore. The boarding team verified the vessel’s compliance with applicable federal laws and fisheries regulations. No illicit activity or violations were identified, and the vessel was cleared to continue its voyage.

The crew also responded to a dispute between two fishermen that involved a firearm. The crew arrived on scene, separated the parties and de-escalated the situation. The incident was resolved without further issue.

The Coast Guard conducts routine patrols throughout Southern California waters in support of maritime safety, security and law enforcement missions.
