The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) welcomed Australia’s announcement of additional support for its aerial and maritime drone capabilities and training during Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong’s visit aboard BRP Teresa Magbanua (MRRV-9701) at Pier 15, Port Area, Manila, today, July 21, 2026.
Department of Transportation (DOTr) Senior Undersecretary, Mark Steven Pastor and PCG Commandant, Admiral Ronnie Gil Gavan PCG, welcomed Foreign Minister Wong, highlighting Australia’s continued support for the PCG’s capability development.
During the engagement, Foreign Minister Wong announced Australian support to enhance the PCG’s aerial and maritime drone capabilities and training from 2026 to 2030.
The new assistance builds on Australia’s previous support for the PCG’s Maritime Domain Awareness initiatives and reflects the growing strategic partnership between the Philippines and Australia in promoting maritime safety and regional stability.
The visit also featured a static display of drone assets previously provided by Australia, highlighting the practical outcomes of bilateral cooperation in advancing maritime capability and operational readiness.
Following the onboard program, Foreign Minister Wong held a private meeting with Admiral Gavan, where they exchanged views on maritime security and opportunities to further expand bilateral maritime cooperation.
According to PCG Spokesperson, Commodore Noemie Cayabyab, the engagement further deepened the partnership between the Philippines and Australia, founded on mutual trust and a shared commitment to promoting a peaceful and rules-based maritime region.
“The PCG remains committed to working closely with Australia to strengthen maritime security and enhance its capabilities in safeguarding the country’s maritime interests,” Commodore Cayabyab said.
