Project 22350 Admiral Golovko to Commission By Year’s End

The Northern Fleet will receive the first full-time carrier of the Zircon hypersonic cruise missile. By the end of this year, it will include the newest Project 22350 frigate Admiral Golovko. The ship is capable of destroying any targets at sea and in the air, as well as using hypersonic missiles against ground targets. Experts note that ships of this class have not been built since Soviet times, the frigates of the “Admiral’s series” became the beginning of a new Russian ocean fleet.

The work plan for the final stage of construction of the Admiral Golovko frigate has been approved , sources in the military department told Izvestia. According to the document, all work on the acceptance of the ship into the Navy should be completed before the end of 2022.

According to the interlocutors of the publication , the crew of the ship is currently completing training and is preparing to take the final test. In autumn, sailors will start testing the frigate at sea. By the end of the year, the Admiral Golovko must pass all sea trials, fire standard weapons at sea, air and ground targets. True, Izvestia’s sources refused to explain whether launches of Zircon hypersonic missiles were planned from the ship.

Based “Admiral Golovko” will be in Severomorsk. The construction of a berth and infrastructure for the frigate is being completed there. It is assumed that he will be part of the 43rd division of missile ships of the Northern Fleet (SF). This connection is the main striking force of the Northern Fleet . It includes the largest and most powerful combat units, in particular, the aircraft-carrying cruiser Admiral Kuznetsov and the flagship of the Northern Fleet, the nuclear-powered missile cruiser Peter the Great.

Last spring, Commander-in-Chief of the Navy Admiral Nikolai Evmenov announced that Project 22350 frigates would become the first full-time carriers of hypersonic weapons. It was the lead ship of this series, Admiral Gorshkov, that tested the new Zircon system, including the first practical launches. However, only part of the Zircon test complex is installed on this ship. The second ship – the Admiral Kasatonov series – also serves in the 43rd division of missile ships of the Northern Fleet, but has not yet been equipped with this type of weapon. Thus, it is Admiral Golovko that will become the first regular carrier of this hypersonic missile.

“Admiral Golovko” will be the third representative of the project 22350. The series was laid down in 2006. The lead ship “Admiral Gorshkov” was handed over to the fleet in 2018, the next – “Admiral Kasatonov” – was commissioned in July last year.

In total, according to the plan, eight frigates of the “Admiral’s series”, as they are called in the Navy, should be created. The Admiral Isakov is now at the final stage, work is underway on the construction of the Admiral Chichagov. In 2020, the Admiral Spiridonov and Admiral Yumashev were laid down, two more ships are planned to be laid down this year.

“Admiral Golovko” will have advanced capabilities that were not originally available to his older brothers. In particular, it will install a powerful anti-aircraft missile system “Polyment-Redut” , tested last year. This system was created on the basis of the land “S-350 Vityaz”, it can simultaneously fire at air and sea targets. Its arsenal includes 9M96E missiles with a range of up to 50 km, 9M96E2-1 with a range of up to 150 km, and 9M100, capable of intercepting targets at a distance of up to 10 km. In total, the Project 22350 frigate has 32 installations for anti-aircraft guided missiles.

Before the frigates of project 22350, ships of the oceanic zone were not built in the post-Soviet years , said Admiral Valentin Selivanov, ex-chief of the main headquarters of the Navy.

All other ships of this class, which are today in the fleet, appeared in the Soviet years, – said the admiral. — So these frigates are the beginning of a new Russian ocean fleet. They can form powerful ship formations with an effective air defense system and strike capabilities. The main task of such formations is the fight against enemy ship groupings, including aircraft carriers. Naval forces of NATO can create such groupings.

Frigates of the “admiral” series, as noted by the commander-in-chief of the Navy, Admiral Nikolai Evmenov, are the most modern warships in Russia. They can operate in the ocean zone both alone and as part of heterogeneous naval groupings.

The ships have good seaworthiness and are reliable. In 2019, the Admiral Gorshkov, at the head of a detachment of Navy ships, made a round-the-world trip, during which it overcame more than 40,000 nautical miles (74,000 km) without serious damage.

On board the “admirals” carry an impressive arsenal. It includes Caliber cruise missiles, Onyx anti-ship missiles and Zircon hypersonic missiles. The ships are equipped with a 130-mm A-192M artillery mount, two 30-mm Broadsword artillery systems, and the Paket-NK anti-submarine complex.

In addition, the new frigates are equipped with an effective electronic warfare system, thanks to which they are reliably protected from detection and attack by anti-ship missiles.

Earlier, Izvestia reported that the Diamond anti-mine complex, which includes boats and underwater drones, could be installed on board the ships. He is able to work at a distance of up to 10 km from the ship , detecting and eliminating mines at a depth of 10 to 100 meters. Also in service are drones and a helicopter. The automatic control system (ACS) allows frigates to coordinate with ships, aircraft, and even ground units.
