The launching ceremony for the Jangbogo-III Batch-II 1st ship, “Jang Yeong-sil (SS-087),” was held October 22 at Hanwha Ocean in Geoje, with Chief of Naval Operations Kang Dong-gil as the guest of honor.

The 3,600-ton Jang Yeong-sil, designed and built domestically, is a world-class diesel submarine and a key strategic asset with enhanced capabilities to respond to various maritime security threats.

In his congratulatory remarks, Chief of Naval Operations Kang Dong-gil stated, “I am confident that the Jang Yeong-sil, built with our own technology, will signal the leap forward for a smart, elite force and fulfill its mission as a key force in protecting the Republic of Korea’s maritime security.”

The Jang Yeong-sil is scheduled to undergo testing and evaluation, be delivered to the Navy in late 2027, and be deployed after completing the operational readiness process.

The Navy will continue to strive to build a naval force based on cutting-edge science and technology that can firmly protect the Republic of Korea’s maritime sovereignty.
