HMS Stirling Castle has been officially granted permission by Stirling Council to adopt the city’s historic motto ‘Steadfast as the Rock’ for itself.
This significant gesture reflects the deepening connection between specialist mine hunting ship HMS Stirling Castle and the people of Stirling, in central Scotland.

The motto, long associated with the city which is now in its 900th year as well as its iconic castle, symbolizes strength, resilience, and unwavering duty—values that lie at the heart of Royal Navy service.

The strong historical and cultural ties between the Royal Navy and Scottish communities are well recognized, and this partnership with Stirling Council further reinforces that bond. The ship’s company looks forward to fostering close links with the city, its people, and the broader Stirling community in the years to come.

As HMS Stirling Castle prepares for future operations, the motto ‘Steadfast as the Rock’ will serve as a daily reminder of the enduring strength and shared pride between the ship and the City of Stirling.

Commander Phil Harper, HMS Stirling Castle’s Commanding Officer, said: “The sense of pride and gratitude we feel is boundless.

“The people and Council of the City of Stirling have granted us a rare honor in allowing us to use their motto. Our thanks go to the Lord Provost and the elected members of the Council of Stirling for their generosity and kindness to my ship’s company.”

Lord Provost Elaine Watterson added: “The decision for HMS Stirling Castle to adopt the city’s historic motto, ‘Steadfast as the Rock’ was unanimously agreed by the full council.

“This reflects the pride we feel at the decision by the Royal Navy to name the ship after our most iconic landmark – the first time since 1811 a vessel has been named HMS Stirling Castle.

“We great value greatly the role of our service men and women from the Royal Navy and other armed forces and, as a minehunter, HMS Stirling Castle will play an important role in maritime security across the world.

“We look forward to welcoming personnel from the Royal Navy and HMS Stirling Castle to our Remembrance Day and Armed Forces Day events in the coming weeks and months.”
