Mar del Plata Welcomed Velas Latinoamérica 2022

Yesterday afternoon (March 9), the Tall Ships of Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Uruguay held a nautical parade off the coast of Mar del Plata, thus inaugurating the activities of the Velas Latinoamérica 2022 meeting. , the units were escorted by the ocean patrol boats ARA “Piedrabuena” and ARA “Storni”, along with vessels from the Argentine Naval Prefecture and yacht clubs.

Hundreds of families came to appreciate and photograph the units and enjoy the songs and marches performed by the Argentine Navy Music Band. In addition, the nautical parade was witnessed by the Mayor of General Pueyrredón, Guillermo Montenegro; the Chief of the General Staff of the Argentine Navy, Admiral Julio Horacio Guardia; foreign military attachés; and military, civil and security forces authorities.

The activities planned for the coming days include open days at the units – from Friday 11 to Monday 14–; parades of the crews of the participating ships and the National Sea Guard; and artistic shows in the Nautical Park installed in the Mar del Plata Naval Base.

The ships participating in this fourth edition of Velas Latinoamérica are: the frigate ARA “Libertad” and the motorsailer “Dr. Bernardo Houssay” from Argentina; the “Cisne Branco” ship from Brazil; the OPV vessel “July 20” from Colombia; the brigantine “Guayas” from Ecuador; the sailboat “Capitán Miranda” from the Oriental Republic of Uruguay; and the bricbarca “Unión” of the Republic of Peru.

The Tall Ships began their journey on February 13 in the port of Rio de Janeiro. Punta del Este and Montevideo followed. The main objective of the event is to deepen relations and knowledge between the participating Navies; spread the cultures of the participating countries; strengthen institutional and personal ties; foster friendship and camaraderie among new generations of seafarers; and disseminate the actions and responsibilities of the Institutions.
