On Sunday afternoon, the frigate ARA “Libertad” moored in the port of Rio de Janeiro from the Puerto Belgrano Naval Base, from where it had sailed on February 2, to begin the journey of the 4th edition of the Meeting of Tall Ships “Velas Latinoamérica”.
The training ship of the Argentine Navy, under the command of Captain Carlos Pedro Schavinsky Trinchero, before arriving participated in the nautical parade along with other training ships, which were accompanied by local boats. From land, hundreds of families came to the coast to appreciate and photograph the naval event.
As is tradition, the Ambassador of the Seas entered the port with the topmen on the masts, and sails were unfurled in the colors of the Argentine flag and that of the host country. The chords of the Brazilian Navy Music Band welcomed the training ships from Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Uruguay.
The reception was headed by the Chief of General Staff of the Navy, Admiral Julio Horacio Guardia, accompanied by the Consul General of the Argentine Republic in Rio de Janeiro, Minister Claudio Ricardo Gutiérrez; the Deputy Consul General, Vanina Yanino; the National Naval Prefect, General Prefect Mario Rubén Fariñon; authorities of the Organizing Committee of the meeting “Velas Latinoamérica 2022” and the Argentine Advisor in CAMAS, Captain Daniel Finardi.
The activities planned for this port include tours of the main cultural and historical centers, including the Museo do Amanha. In addition, commissioned midshipmen and cadets from the Naval Military School will participate in an ecological day aimed at contributing to the awareness of caring for the environment; They will also carry out sports activities at the Recreational Center of the Naval Fusiliers of the Brazilian Navy.
On the other hand, Captain Schavinsky together with commissioned midshipmen will visit the Naval School of the Brazilian Navy with the aim of exchanging experiences, fostering bonds of friendship and brotherhood between the Navies.
Likewise, daily visits to the moored sailboats are expected to be received by the general public, who will be able to appreciate them from the dock, in compliance with the sanitary protocol established by the host country.
On Sunday morning, the frigate ARA “Libertad” will weigh anchor and head to Punta del Este (Uruguay), where it will anchor, prior to its arrival in Montevideo.
During the 12 days of navigation, the commissioned midshipmen and cadets put into practice the theoretical and technical knowledge of navigation and the exercise of the administration of the positions on board.
In addition to fulfilling the watches and the different tasks on decks, they carried out work on smaller vessels; firefighting exercises and abandonment roles, essential training that will allow them to give an immediate response to any situation.
It should be noted that in this leg the crew continued sail training in order to improve the mark of the traditional Boston Teapot Trophy regatta for tall ships .
