Currently, the division of missile ships is the largest and most powerful unit of the Russian Navy. Its combat strength includes the missile cruisers Pyotr Veliky and Marshal Ustinov, the destroyer Admiral Ushakov, as well as the frigates Admiral of the Fleet of the Soviet Union Gorshkov and Admiral of the Fleet Kasatonov. After the modernization is completed, the heavy aircraft-carrying cruiser Admiral Kuznetsov of the Fleet of the Soviet Union and the heavy nuclear-powered missile cruiser Admiral Nakhimov will join the formation. The new project 22350 frigate “Admiral Golovko” (named after the legendary commander of the Northern Fleet from 1940 to 1946 Arseny Grigoryevich Golovko), the construction of which is being completed at the Severnaya Verf shipyard in St. Petersburg, after completion of all tests will also become part of the division missile ships of the Northern Fleet.
Currently, two ships of the formation – the missile cruiser “Marshal Ustinov” and the frigate “Admiral of the Fleet Kasatonov” – are performing assigned tasks in the northeast Atlantic under the flag of division commander Captain 1st Rank Igor Nikitin.
