FS Germinal Intercepts 680 Kilos of Cocaine

On January 29, 2022, the surveillance frigate Germinal , on a surveillance mission in the Caribbean Sea, intervened in international waters on a suspicious fast boat, without nationality marks. The “go-fast” fled when the soldiers approached, while throwing bundles into the sea. Pursued, the boat and its four occupants were finally arrested. Twenty bales were recovered at sea representing a total of 680 kg of cocaine.

On the instruction of the public prosecutor of Fort-de-France, the narcotics, the boat and the suspects were handed over to the antenna of the Anti-Narcotics Office (OFAST) of Martinique. This operation, carried out with the support of the Regional Security System , an international organization working for the defense and security of the Eastern Caribbean, was conducted under the direction of the Prefect of Martinique, Government Delegate for State Action at sea and the maritime zone commander of the Antilles.

This first seizure of the year 2022 for the Armed Forces in the Antilles (FAA) represents a loss of around 47 million euros on resale. It deals a major blow to drug trafficking in the West Indies. 2021, which marked the twentieth year of the FAA’s commitment against drug trafficking at sea, was a record year: more than nine tons of cocaine were withdrawn from the market.
