New Amphibious Landing Craft for French Navy

The General Directorate of Armaments (DGA) received on November 26, 2021 the Crossbow and the Arquebus , the first two standard amphibious landing craft (EDA-S) that it ordered in 2019 from the company CNIM for the benefit of of the French Navy and the Army. Deliveries of the next twelve EDA-S will run until 2025.

The EDA-S program participates in the renewal of the capacities of the armed forces enshrined in the Military Programming Law (LPM) 2019-2025 carried by the Ministry of the Armed Forces. The EDA-S replaced the material transport barges (CTM) built in the 1980s.

The EDA-S will be deployed from the three Mistral class amphibious helicopter carriers (PHA) , as well as overseas.

Serial production is carried out in Saint-Malo (Ille-et-Vilaine) by the French shipyard Socarenam, CNIM’s subcontractor for this project. The EDA-S program has made it possible to consolidate nearly 200 jobs at CNIM, SOCARENAM and their subcontractors.

The reception of the first two EDA-S will follow the success of a test campaign on land and at sea started in the summer of 2021 and carried out by the experts of the DGA with the support of the operational staff of the French Navy. These tests made it possible in particular to validate the ability of the EDA-S to embark and disembark all types of transport vehicles and armored vehicles of the Army up to the heaviest of them (the Leclerc tank), whether on a beach, from a PHA or from a dock or an inclined ramp, day or night.

Eight EDA-S are intended for the Toulon amphibious flotilla to replace the existing CTMs. The other six will be deployed overseas to replace various logistics barges: two in Djibouti, one in Mayotte, one in New Caledonia, one in Martinique and one in Guyana.

The EDA-S are compact vessels (length 28.8 meters / width 6.7 meters) allowing PHAs to embark up to four.

The design of the EDA-S aimed at three objectives: simplicity, robustness and reliability. Maneuvered by four crew members, they have a ” Roll On – Roll Off ” type architecture : their two doors allow vehicles to embark either from the front or from the rear on a working deck occupying the entire length. of the ship. Their increased capacities, compared to the CTMs they replace, allow them to navigate on the high seas and a greater range of activities. The EDA-S also allow a greater diversity of boarding and offer a greater performance in navigation, both in terms of maneuverability and range.
